All eyes have been on the boys of Channel Islands this year; Kelly, Dane, and Al especially. Big moves towards new shapes and designs have caused a whirlwind of blog posts, youtube comments and either haters or lovers of forward thinking.
Dane’s ability to surf short stubby boards through contest heats and fly across the screen in progressive surf movies has fed the next generation of young surfers a healthy portion of psyche. With the addition of the Dumpster Diver to his quiver, his fins free attitude has shined bright. And you can watch it all unfold on his blog.
With the help of Al Merrick, Kelly Slater has been pushing the limits in surfboard design. Kelly showed us that a World competitor can win heats on boards self made. He also showed us that he can get barreled on a 5’6 at well overhead Todos Santos. His Wizard Sleeve has pushed surfing to new levels.
“Most things have probably been done, but there are things I want to try, like beveled rails and asymmetrical tails and digging ou the decks of the boards so my foot’s lower and closer to the water.” -Kelly Slater, “What We’ve learned about Surfboards”, Surfing Magazine.
