Ben Weiland from Carlsbad, California is a filmmaker that’s determined on exploring frozen frontiers in search of good surf and extreme weather conditions. Weiland spends his time researching and scouring the internet about long-range swell patterns and watches live camera feeds from Alaskan shipping ports. Unlike most, Ben is the type of person who goes for the thrill of the adventure and experience not just the best waves. To document the beauty in which he sees on his journey is what drives him to go through all the trouble to travel to these remote places.
“There aren’t a lot of places anymore where you can come across a perfect wave and have it all to yourself,” says Weiland. “Well, maybe there are, but they’re definitely not easy to find. I think that’s a really important part of surfing; that mystery and exploration aspect. I get restless surfing the same breaks at home in California, so I’ll look on a map and find some exotic, far-off, setups and try to put the pieces in place to get there. The potential is addictive.”
