Forged for Lowers. The shaper creates the craft, the goldsmith creates the prize, and the surfer the legacy. It all comes together May 1 at the 2012 Nike Lowers Pro. Tune in live May 1-5 at nikelowerspro.com.

Back in 1890, weary workers on the Pacific Railroad bridged the San Mateo and San Onofre creeks with boards, rails and spikes. Some 50 years later, intrepid surfers discovered peeling waves up along the tracks and soon realized that the best takeoff spots were directly in front of the train trestles.

Today, those Trestles are synonymous with California’s rich surfing history, which is why when it came time to craft a trophy synonymous with Trestles for The Nike Lowers Pro, the railroad had to be incorporated.

Enter the Golden Spike.

In just a few short years the trophy for the Nike Lowers Pro has become the most valuable in pro surfing. Why? Well, because this is no piece of plastic. This spike is made entirely of 14 karat gold, placing its current value at over $30,000. And with fiat currencies plummeting worldwide in these turbulent times, it’s value keeps climbing. It’s still about boards and rails down at Trestles, but the pay is a lot better, and the work a lot more fun.

LOWER TRESTLES, San Clemente/California (Monday, April 30, 2012) – The opening day of the 2012 ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro will kickoff tomorrow, Tuesday, May 1 and with several of the world’s best surfers in the draw and consistent waves expected throughout the waiting period, this year’s elite event is set to provide plenty of action.

Held at the iconic pointbreak of Lower Trestles, the Nike Lowers Pro is often claimed as the most progressive event of the season, with ASP Top 34 surfers and fierce up-and-comers both battling it out for the vital points on offer towards their ASP World Ranking at one of the world’s most high-performance waves.
