A documentary film following the lives of artists, film makers and skateboarders, who’s under the radar and do it yourself mentality has bloomed into a collection of talent recognized around the globe. Beautiful Losers was filmed and directed by Aaron Rose. In the 1990’s, a young crew of artists influenced by the popular subcultures of graffiti, skateboarding, and independent music began to collaborate in NY City. Names including Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonzales, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Phil Frost, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, and Ed Templeton fed off each other’s energy. Starting with small scale collaboration shows, the Beautiful Losers began creating names for themselves and honing their own styles. This metamorphosis was captured on film over the years. Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard spliced the bunch together, forming a documentary for our eye balls to process. The film was shown at The Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego, in La Jolla.

The mood was one of creativity and humor, with a dose of reality mixed in for taste. An over-all understanding for humanity as a whole, with an emphasis in equality and creativity was bleeding from the screen. The collaboration has also led to a book that was published in 2005
